How To Help Your Teenagers Stay Healthy: Physical Health   by Adrian Adams

Teenagers have different health needs than children and adults, but they are not always aware of what makes a good health decision. The issue is further complicated by changing moods and temperaments, which could leave your steak-loving teen declaring they are now a vegetarian at any time. Fortunately, parents can take steps to help their teen stay healthy.

Physical Health

The physical health needs of a teenager are different from both younger children and adults. Between physical changes, hormonal changes, and lifestyle changes, teenagers encounter a variety of influences that have bearing on their physical health. The following can help you ensure that your teen stays physically healthy:

Discuss sexual health. Granted, this is a difficult topic for any parent to discuss with their child, but it is of vital importance. According to statistics, sexually active teens are more likely to drop out of school, as well as being more likely to use drugs and alcohol. They also face the possibility of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, some of which are treatable but not curable. Discuss abstinence, condom and birth control use, and sexually transmitted diseases with your teen. Don’t leave it to the health teacher to explain things or you run the risk of your teen getting all of their knowledge from their friends.

Help with food choices. Most teens do not get enough calcium or iron, but they get too much fat and sugar. Their food choices not only affect them now, but they can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, anemia and osteoporosis later. Make sure you have healthy food choices, like fruit for snacks, available in the home. While talking to them about future risks can help them choose wisely, you will get more results if you show them how healthy choices will help them now. For example, point out that a healthy diet and plenty of water will help them have clearer skin.

Give them vitamins. Sometimes, teens simply have less-than-ideal diets. Make sure you keep a good multi-vitamin, preferably one with calcium, available for your teen. While it is a good idea to suggest or encourage taking vitamins, remember that pushing the issue will only cause your teen to refuse.

Encourage exercise. Teens need more physical activity than pushing buttons on a cell phone. Encourage your teen to be physically active. For some, the easiest way to ensure exercise is to allow them to participate in team sports. Another method of getting your teen moving is to have family activities, like volleyball, basketball, or bicycling.

The physical health of your teen influences their physical health as an adult, so it is important that you help them maintain their physical health. Remember that one of the best ways of helping your teen stay physically healthy is to set a good example with your own choices.

I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!: How Fathers Deal With Family Break-ups

$37

Popular culture often portrays divorced fathers as deadbeats who have little interest in caring for the emotional, physical, and financial needs of their children. In the stereotype-shattering book, “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!”, Gerhard Amendt presents the long-neglected plight of the divorced father who is plagued by grief and loneliness after being separated from his children. Based on surveys and in-depth interviews of thousands of such dads, Amendt reveals how fathers cope with trying to salvage their own lives while simultaneously maintaining relationships with their children after a painful divorce.Amendt’s incisive look at divided families also explores the impact that a single-parent household has on children’s well-being, criticizing the American tendency to over-pathologize normal reactions to familial upheaval. Even the most civilized of divorces, Amendt argues, can cause rage, sadness, potential health problems, and behavioral disturbances in otherwise well-adjusted children. The broad spectrum of experiences recounted in “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!” will be essential reading for anyone interested in, or personally shaped by, the changing face of the modern family.

”The numbers don’t work for us”: An alternate model of fundamental causality from the perspectives of African Americans in urban Atlanta.

$49.99

Racial/ethnic disparities between African Americans and Whites in a number of health outcomes continue to exist despite decades of intervention research and social policy changes. Several perspectives have been proposed to explain the existence of these disparities, including the fundamental cause perspective. The fundamental cause perspective is promising because it suggests that focusing on distal factors that influence multiple risk factors and health outcomes may be the key to eliminating longstanding disparities in health. Proponents of this perspective suggest that low socioeconomic status is a fundamental cause of health disparities and that there are others yet to be determined and explicated. This study informs the development of an alternate model of fundamental causality rooted in the perspectives of those living in a neighborhood characterized by poor health and social outcomes.;Between April and August 2006 twenty residents (in two groups) from an urban Atlanta area used Photovoice to document their health and social realities. In total, they participated in seven rounds of picture-taking followed by seven small group dialogue sessions. Grounded theory analysis of the transcripts from these dialogues was used to develop an explanatory model of fundamental causes and their mechanisms. In contrast to the traditional framing of health in terms of physical health, residents defined community well-being and mental health as priority health concerns. Residents also identified the underlying factors and mechanisms that they believed contributed to poor community well-being and poor mental health. The most significant underlying factor was White and middle class Black indifference toward poor African Americans embedded in institutional practices and prevailing ideologies. This indifference contributes to neighborhood and housing disinvestment, speculative development, and displacement of families out of the neighborhood. The model also indicates that African

”They imprison the whole population”: U.S. and South African prison literature and the emergence of symbiotic carcerality, 1900–present.

$49.99

This dissertation is motivated by the following question: what spatial formation structures the living spaces poor Black people reside in and what effect does it have on their subjectivity? “They imprison the whole population” is a transnational comparative study of the “prisonization” of poor Black communities in the United States and South Africa from the dawn of the twentieth century to present. It seeks to understand the ways prisons affect society beyond focusing on rising incarceration rates. I argue that poor Blacks live under what I call symbiotic carcerality: prison techniques and spatial forms deployed across Black living space. I focus on how people are shaped by the carceral environment in which they live. To illustrate its impact, I examine how gender performance, physical health, body shape, aesthetics, diet, housing, mobility, and citizenship are formed and circumscribed by the symbiont circle between carceral space and the living space of poor Blacks.;I write at the convergence of what Black prison intellectual Assata Shakur called the “minimum security prison on the streets”, Michel Foucault’s notion of the “carceral”, and what human geographers McKittrick and Wood’s term “Black geographies”. Academic work in Black masculine studies (gender studies), critical prison studies, Marxism, Black cultural studies, and comparative studies of race and ethnicity has contributed much to my theoretical framework, and to the mix of humanities and social science methods I use. My research has uncovered a powerful yet submerged tradition in Black American and Black South African literature that meditates on the ubiquity of prison punishment in the lives of “free” people. Its primary source is the writings of Black prisoners. Through stories, memoirs, poetry, social commentary, and letters, they articulate the entrenchment of carceral punishment in poor Black communities. Black literary artists, activists, and scholars also contribute to theorizing carceral space.

''You are what you think'': American self-help and the myth of unlimited human potential.

”You are what you think”: American self-help and the myth of unlimited human potential.

$49.99

“You are what you think” is a popular self-help philosophy, outlined in books written by Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Shakti Gawain, and others. In a mutable, responsive, quantum universe, the energetic vibrations of thoughts and feelings determine one’s life circumstances. Wealth, love, happiness, health, even physical immortality can be obtained by anyone who understands the “Law of Attraction”—that positive vibrations reliably generate positive results. These claims are presented as literal truth, buttressed by developments in modern physics and the insights of Eastern spiritual practitioners. But “you are what you think” is best understood as a myth, a contemporary manifestation of archetypal patterns. I call this self-help philosophy “the myth of unlimited human potential.”;In this study, I undertake an archetypal analysis of the central images or ideas in the myth of unlimited human potential as it appears in bestselling self-help books. For example, “energy” and “abundance,” the “higher self,” and the prescribed “evolution” to a “higher consciousness” in the myth are powerful variations of the archetypal Hero, the Child, and Paradise, the lost state of blissful innocence and security. These come together in the image of the “unlimited,” a free, expansive human being in an infinite cosmos, capable of endless transformation, that is the heart of the myth. The image of the unlimited, as New World, frontier, and the Land of Opportunity for the self-made man, is also an essential component of the American Dream.;The myth of unlimited human potential is relentlessly optimistic about the natural goodness and creative role that individuals play in the world, and this dogmatism creates an unacknowledged shadow. The mythic or archetypal perspective opens up this fundamentalist philosophy of optimism to reveal the psychological fantasies of power, divinity, immortality, and innocence that fuel the myth, along with their less desirable and difficult aspects. This study explores prayer, literature, and healing in late fourteenth- and early fifteenth-century England, focusing on the intersections between medieval women’s medicine and spiritual devotion. More specifically, it argues that medieval women strove to harness the prophylactic power that the word/Word exerted over a psychosomatically unified body and soul. This research considers the ways in which the Little Office inspired a devotional practice that used plaintive aspects of the psalms to promote emotional internalization, diagnosis, rehabilitation, and reintegration as a means to salvation of body and soul. Finally, the dissertation identifies two applications of prayer possibly inspired by books of hours. It discusses birthing girdles, scrolls of parchment inscribed with prayer and often worn by parturient mothers to ease—or even eliminate— the pain of childbirth. It also considers the ways in which Julian of Norwich emphasizes the salutary properties of prayer with regard to spiritual despair, a condition that, for Julian and her contemporaries, affected both the soul and the body. Julian’s treatment of the condition betrays a particularly feminine understanding of prayer, speech, and modes of receiving and expressing sacred knowledge.;On close inspection, one can recognize that books of hours and prayer scrolls contain carefully constructed
