An examination of the motivations of sporting event volunteers within intercollegiate athletics at Clemson University.

$49.99

In 2006, The Corporation for National and Community Service partnered with the Bureau of Labor Statistics to add a volunteer section to the Current Population Survey (CPS) that is sent out to 60,000 households each year. That year it was reported that 61.2 million people volunteered their time, effort, and labor through or for an organization. An additional 5.3 million people did volunteer work informally through helping their communities. Organizations across the world, specifically sports organizations, rely heavily on volunteers for success. Volunteers at the 2004 Summer Olympics (45,000), based off the assumption of working a full 8 hour for 16 days and the federal minimum wage before 2007 of $5.15, saved the Olympics an estimated $29,664,000 in American currency. The challenging issue for these organizations is maintaining volunteers year after year. At Clemson University, the athletic department has a volunteer group that assists with running Olympic sports. Known as CAVA (Clemson Athletic Volunteer Ambassadors), this group is responsible for ushering, greeting, and ticket taking. As compensation for their assistance, the athletic department gives CAVA members a free meal voucher at the event they work, official Clemson merchandise, and invites them to recognition banquets throughout the year. Ensuring that these volunteers continue to work with the program is important to the fiscal health of the overall athletic department. The Sport Volunteer Survey (SVS), which focuses on five factors of volunteerism, was distributed to CAVA members. Two of the five factors reported overall mean scores above 3.0 of a 5 point scale of importance. Those factors were the purposive and external factors. The three factors with scores lower than 3.0 were the egoistic, leisure, and material factors. An independent t-test identified the mean score of one factor, leisure, to be significantly different by gender.

An online system for bioterrorism surveillance.

An online system for bioterrorism surveillance.

$49.99

Bioterrorism has become one of the greatest threats for nations. As bioterrorism threats are increasing these days, research in bioterrorism surveillance has been conducted to detect the threats at the earliest time. Following this research, some bioterrorism surveillance systems have been developed. Some of these systems use humans as indicators and the others use animals. Both of these systems detect the threats by collecting and analyzing the statistical data on health trends. Since most bio-weapons start as animal diseases, using animals as indicators allow identification of a bioterrorism threat at earlier time than using humans.;Current bioterrorism surveillance systems based on animals focus only on certain groups of animal species while there are other animal species that are also very susceptible to the highly-threatening diseases. The system introduced here provides a step towards the identification of highly-threatening diseases in animal species, such as cattle and pigs. In the event of such identification, a red flag is raised and related information is sent to agents responsible for looking into the threats in more detail. The design, implementation and result of this system are given and explained.

Cognitive appraisal of perceived threat of diabetes and adherence to self-management behaviors.

$49.99

Background. Within adherence research, health beliefs have been identified as being significant predictors of adherence. Specifically, perceived threat as a health belief has received considerable attention. However, a gap in current knowledge exists in terms of understanding perceived threat of illness as an event that is appraised by the patient.;Aim. The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive study was to examine cognitive appraisal of perceived threat of illness in relation to adherence to self-management behaviors in uninsured/under-insured persons with type 2 diabetes.;Method. A convenience sample consisted of 80 subjects being treated for type 2 diabetes mellitus at a free clinic in West Virginia between January 2008 and May 2008 meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) age > 18 years, (2) diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, (3) the ability to read, write, or understand English, and (4) uninsured/under-insured and receiving care at a free clinic. Subjects were administered the Summary of Diabetes Self Care Activities and the Cognitive Appraisal of Health Scale.;Results. Characteristics of the study sample included a mean age of 50.4 years (range 23 to 64 years), with 27.4% men and 72.4% women. The majority of subjects were white (94.7%), had diabetes for less than 10 years (82.9%), and reported having one to two co-morbidities. The sample followed recommendations for taking prescribed oral medications an average of 6.6 days/week, for general diet an average of 4.1 days/week, for specific diet 3.7 days/week, and for exercise an average of 2.9 days/week. The mean HbA1c = 7.56. HbA1c levels of 7% or greater were found in 49.4% of the subjects. Several significant relationships were found between cognitive appraisal variables and self-management variables. Persons with diabetes in this study perceived their diabetes as more of a challenge than as threatening or causing harm or loss. Cognitive appraisal did predict variance in adherence to diet and HbA1c

Disaster Preparedness: A Health Planning Approach

Disaster Preparedness: A Health Planning Approach

$129

With its recent history of natural and man-made disasters, 21st-century America is constantly on heightened disaster alert. Less obvious is that between people’s individual plans and large-scale government responses, the public health sector faces a daunting array of tasks to prepare for future events. Disaster Preparedness: A Health Planning Approach, sponsored by the AHPA, identifies and analyzes these tasks in terms of three distinct stages – pre-event (planning), during the crisis itself (response), and post-event (recovery) – offering a solid framework for providing effective services during traumatic times. An interdisciplinary panel of disaster planning experts and related agencies examines the current state of preparedness, reviews the health effects of disasters, illustrates core readiness skills (e.g., predicting needs, allocating resources, handling turf battles between competing interests), and provides salient examples of familiar and lesser-known events from the US and elsewhere. Among the topics covered: – Integrating hospitals into community disaster planning; – The roles of public health officials, communities, and social networks; – Creating and sustaining community-wide preparedness systems; – Mental illness and suicidality after Hurricane Katrina; – Disaster preparedness for the disabled, institutionalized patients, and other special populations; – Using electronic health records, predictive modeling, the Emergency Preparedness Resource Inventory, and other cutting-edge resources. This combined conceptual/practical focus gives Disaster Preparedness: A Health Planning Approach an immediate interest to community health planners and health care administrators, researchers and graduate students in public and community health, and policymakers.

Handbook of Social Work in Health and Aging

Handbook of Social Work in Health and Aging

$84.95

The fields of health care, aging, and social work are often treated as discrete entities, while all social workers deal with issues of health and aging on a daily basis, regardless of practice specialization. The Handbook of Social Work in Health and Aging is the first reference to address this reality by compiling the most current thinking on these subjects in a single volume. With the population of older adults increasing as rapidly as new possibilities for their care, professionals need an accessible source of specialized information about how best to serve the elderly and their families, and they will find this authoritative handbook indispensable. In 100 original chapters, the most experienced and prominent gerontological health care scholars in the United States and across the world provide social workers with up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based practice guidelines for effectively assessing and treating older adults and supporting their families. The contributing authors paint rich portraits of a variety of populations that social workers serve and arenas in which they practice, followed by detailed recommendations of best practices for an array of physical and mental health conditions. Its unprecedented attention to diversity, global trends, and implications for research, government policy, and education make the publication of such a compendium a major event in the field of gerontological social work.Ambitious and multi-dimensional, this handbook represents the best research on health and aging available to social workers today.

 History of Medicine

History of Medicine

$84

This Book Provides a Brief Survey of the History of Western Medicine with reference to recent scholarly literature and current issues in health care. Organized conceptually around the major fields of medical endeavour — anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, surgery, obstetrics, psychiatry, pediatrics, and family medicine — Duffin’s History of Medicine is an accessible overview of medical history as a vibrant component of social, intellectual, and cultural history and as a research discipline in its own right. Each chapter begins in antiquity and ends in the twentieth century. Throughout, Duffin shows that alternative interpretations can be found for most elements of our past, and that topics of interest can go well beyond ‘great men’ and ‘great discoveries’ to include ideas, diseases, patients, institutions, and great mistakes. This approach does not mean that the ‘great men’ (and women) are neglected; rather they appear in context. Medical disasters, like chloramphenicol and thalidomide, are covered along with the triumphs; and examples from Canada’s past, largely ignored in other medical histories, are included. A chapter on methodology, suggestions for further reading with special attention to Canadian sources, and a careful index make it possible to research a specific event or historical debate, or to satisfy a more general curiosity.By presenting the material in a structure that resonates with the broad outlines of medical training, and by focusing on the questions students ask most often, this text is a relevant guide for students to the history of the profession they are about to embrace, and for those who would teach them, be they physicians or historians.Duffin’s clear and entertaining prose and the many illustrations will help to demystify medicine for general readers and for students in other domains, such as history, philosophy, and sociology.

Nurses on the Front Line: When Disaster Strikes, 1878-2010

Nurses on the Front Line: When Disaster Strikes, 1878-2010

$45

This book examines how nurses have responded to natural and man-made disasters in the in the US and Canada over the course of the previous and current centuries. It identifies the care delivered during various disasters; explicates how nurses at the local level intersected with the American Red Cross (ARC), American Nurses Association (ANA), the U.S. Public Health Service, and other federal/state organizations; describes how this intersection changed over time; and analyzes how issues of race, class, and gender influenced the ways nurses and other health care professionals responded to disasters. In each disaster, the safeguards developed, such as urban fire departments and hospitals, were overwhelmed. At the same time, these disasters (see TOC) prompted health care workers, survivors, and civic and private organizations to reflect on the character and speed of responders as documented in letters, memoirs, oral histories, newspaper stories, and professional publications. This book, while asserting that nurses and other health care workers sought to restore stability in the aftermath of a chaotic event, also illustrates how such events can temporarily unravel stable gendered, social, racial, and geographical boundaries while informing and changing professional attitudes to, and standards of, practice. Nine disasters, from the Galveston hurricane of 1900 to the Coconut Grove nightclub fire to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, are discussed.Key Features Presents new and revised commentary on nursing’s response to key disasters in the US and Canada over the course of the 20th and 21st centuriesCaptures important disaster episodes in the development of professional nursing Provides perspectives on disaster relief for nursing and women’s issues researchDiscusses interventions in light of racial, ethnic, gender, and professional contexts Advances the importance of disaster responses that

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Acute and Long-Term Responses to Trauma and Disaster

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Acute and Long-Term Responses to Trauma and Disaster

$65

Trauma and disaster throw lives into chaos and fill people with the fear of loss, injury, and death. Although most individuals experience only transitory posttraumatic symptoms, others experience the effects of the disaster long after the traumatic event when new experiences remind them of the past. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Acute and Long-Term Responses to Trauma and Disaster provides clinicians, researchers, and policy makers with an examination of current advances in research and treatment by recognized experts at the cutting edge of innovation. This timely book incorporates DSM-IV criteria and the new diagnostic category acute stress disorder, which emphasizes the breadth of posttraumatic stress symptoms and disorders and the importance of distinguishing between acute and long-term responses to traumatic events. Individual chapters go beyond PTSD to examine other posttraumatic disorders and responses, the mechanisms of transmission of posttraumatic stress, and its effects on behavior and health in natural and societal disasters and traumas, including war. This volume pays particular attention to the array of psychiatric responses to trauma, including PTSD and the unfolding of illness and recovery over time. Posttraumatic responses are considered across individual, group, family, and community perspectives and from the vantage point of developmental systems from childhood to older adult life.

Practical Aspects of Signal Detection in Pharmacovigilance: Report of CIOMS Working Group VIII

Practical Aspects of Signal Detection in Pharmacovigilance: Report of CIOMS Working Group VIII

$46.8

In recent years public expectations for rapid identification and prompt management of emerging drug safety issues have grown swiftly. Over a similar timeframe, the move from paper-based adverse event reporting systems to electronic capture and rapid transmission of data has resulted in the accrual of substantial datasets capable of complex analysis and querying by industry, regulators and other public health organizations. These two drivers have created a fertile environment for pharmacovigilance scientists, information technologists and statistical experts, working together, to deliver novel approaches to detect signals from these extensive and quickly growing datasets, and to manage them appropriately. In following this exciting story, this report looks at the practical consequences of these developments for pharmacovigilance practitioners. The report provides a comprehensive resource for those considering how to strengthen their pharmacovigilance systems and practices, and to give practical advice. But the report does not specify instant solutions. These will inevitably be situation specific and require careful consideration taking into account local needs. However, the CIOMS Working Group VIII is convinced that the combination of methods and a clear policy on the management of signals will strengthen current systems. Finally, in looking ahead, the report anticipates a number of ongoing developments, including techniques with wider applicability to other data forms than individual case reports. The ultimate test for pharmacovigilance systems is the demonstration of public health benefit and it is this test which signal detection methodologies need to meet if the expectations of all stakeholders are to be fulfilled.

Socioeconomic Differences in Old Age Mortality

Socioeconomic Differences in Old Age Mortality

$69.99

Social differences in health and mortality constitute a persistent finding in epidemiological, demographic, and sociological research. It is a topic that is much discussed in the current political debate and it is among the most urgent public health issues. However, we still do not know whether socioeconomic mortality differences increase or decrease with age. This book provides a comprehensive, critical discussion of all aspects involved in the relationship between socioeconomic status, health and mortality. It synthesizes the sociological theory of social inequality and an empirical study of mortality differences that has been conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (Rosk, Germany). This study is the most comprehensive analysis of socioeconomic mortality differences in the literature, both in terms of quantity and quality of data, and in terms of the statistical method used: that of event-history modeling.

The Anthrax Letters: A Medical Detective Story

The Anthrax Letters: A Medical Detective Story

$29.94

The events of September 11 and the anthrax attacks that followed only three weeks later were horrifying. Many of us felt we were living in a world gone mad. Already shaken by the images of jetliners deliberately flow into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, we were soon scared to open our mail. No longer could we look forward to birthday wishes or holiday postcards. We couldn’t even safely face the delivery of our monthly bills. We had become paralyzed by the microbial menace that could be lurking in our mailboxes. This time terror had struck close to home–to everyone’s home. But behind the panic and the politics was a key line of defense. While the police and FBI frantically investigated a crime, there were other professionals at work, conducting their own painstaking inquiry–medical and scientific detectives hot on the trail of deadly organisms deliberately set loose in the postal system. Modern heroes in a quickly changing world, the public health officials, physicians, researchers, and scientists who staff our hospitals, clinics, and laboratories will be the first responders on the scene of any future biowarfare event. Conducting his own detective work, bioterrorism expert Leonard Cole has composed a series of fascinating stories that get to the heart of all the noisy sound bites and hysterical headlines. Cole is the only person outside law enforcement to have interviewed every one of the surviving inhalation anthrax victims, along with relatives, friends, and associates of those who died, as well as the public health officials, scientists, researchers, hospital workers, and treating physicians–indeed, anyone who has something of value to add to the story. Speaking throughtheir voices, the narrative reflects the tension and emotions stirred by the events from the fall of 2001. Fast paced and riveting, this minute-by-minute chronicle of the anthrax attacks recounts more than a history of recent current events; it uncovers the untold and perhaps even mor
