Dearest Georg: Love, Literature, and Power in Dark Times: The Letters of Elias, Veza, and Georges Canetti, 1933-1948 $1.99 In 1934, Veza Taubner and Elias Canetti were married in Vienna. Elias describes the arrangement to his brother Georges as a “functional” marriage. Meanwhile, an intense intellectual love affair develops between Veza and Georges, a young doctor suffering fromtuberculosis. Four years later, Veza and Elias flee Nazi-ruled Vienna to London, where they lead an impoverished and extremely complicated marital life in exile. Spanning the major part of Elias’s struggle for literary recognition, from 1933, before the publication of his novel, Auto-da-Fé, to 1959, when he finished his monumental Crowds and Power, the Canetti letters provide an intimate look at these formative years through the prism of a veritable love triangle: the newly married Elias has a string of lovers; his wife, Veza, is hopelessly in love with an idealized image of his youngest brother, Georges; and Georges is drawn to good looking men as well as to his motherly sister-in-law. Independently and often secretly, the couple communicates with Georges, who lives in Paris: Veza tells of Elias’s amorous escapades and bouts of madness, Elias complains about Veza’s poor nerves and depression. Each of them worries about Georges’s health–if she could, Veza would kiss away the germs. Georges is an infrequent correspondent, but he diligently stores away the letters from his brother and sister-in-law. In 2003, long after his death, they were accidentally discovered in a Paris basement and comprise not only a moving and insightful document, but real literature. |

I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!: How Fathers Deal With Family Break-ups $37 Popular culture often portrays divorced fathers as deadbeats who have little interest in caring for the emotional, physical, and financial needs of their children. In the stereotype-shattering book, “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!”, Gerhard Amendt presents the long-neglected plight of the divorced father who is plagued by grief and loneliness after being separated from his children. Based on surveys and in-depth interviews of thousands of such dads, Amendt reveals how fathers cope with trying to salvage their own lives while simultaneously maintaining relationships with their children after a painful divorce.Amendt’s incisive look at divided families also explores the impact that a single-parent household has on children’s well-being, criticizing the American tendency to over-pathologize normal reactions to familial upheaval. Even the most civilized of divorces, Amendt argues, can cause rage, sadness, potential health problems, and behavioral disturbances in otherwise well-adjusted children. The broad spectrum of experiences recounted in “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!” will be essential reading for anyone interested in, or personally shaped by, the changing face of the modern family. |

We”re People First: The Social and Emotional Lives of Individuals with Mental Retardation $86.95 This book describes the course of social and emotional development in children and adults with mental retardation. Based on empirical research exploring the effect of cognitive delays and “socialization for incompetence” on normal developmental milestones, the text is supplemented and enriched by the reflections of individuals with mental retardation. Castles begins with an overview of social and emotional development in intellectually normal persons and a discussion of how this process is affected by the experience of mental retardation. Subsequent chapters deal with changing relationships between persons with retardation and their families throughout their lifespans; friendships and social skills; self-esteem, coping skills, and stigmas; and major issues of adult life such as work, sexuality, marriage, and parenthood. ”You are what you think”: American self-help and the myth of unlimited human potential. $49.99 “You are what you think” is a popular self-help philosophy, outlined in books written by Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Shakti Gawain, and others. In a mutable, responsive, quantum universe, the energetic vibrations of thoughts and feelings determine one’s life circumstances. Wealth, love, happiness, health, even physical immortality can be obtained by anyone who understands the “Law of Attraction”—that positive vibrations reliably generate positive results. These claims are presented as literal truth, buttressed by developments in modern physics and the insights of Eastern spiritual practitioners. But “you are what you think” is best understood as a myth, a contemporary manifestation of archetypal patterns. I call this self-help philosophy “the myth of unlimited human potential.”;In this study, I undertake an archetypal analysis of the central images or ideas in the myth of unlimited human potential as it appears in bestselling self-help books. For example, “energy” and “abundance,” the “higher self,” and the prescribed “evolution” to a “higher consciousness” in the myth are powerful variations of the archetypal Hero, the Child, and Paradise, the lost state of blissful innocence and security. These come together in the image of the “unlimited,” a free, expansive human being in an infinite cosmos, capable of endless transformation, that is the heart of the myth. The image of the unlimited, as New World, frontier, and the Land of Opportunity for the self-made man, is also an essential component of the American Dream.;The myth of unlimited human potential is relentlessly optimistic about the natural goodness and creative role that individuals play in the world, and this dogmatism creates an unacknowledged shadow. The mythic or archetypal perspective opens up this fundamentalist philosophy of optimism to reveal the psychological fantasies of power, divinity, immortality, and innocence that fuel the myth, along with their less desirable and difficult aspects. ‘Adolescence’, Pregnancy and Abortion: Constructing a Threat of Degeneration $18.95 Why, despite evidence to the contrary, does the narrative of the negative consequences of teenage pregnancy, abortion and childbearing persist? This book argues that the negativity surrounding early reproduction is underpinned by a particular understanding of adolescence. It traces the invention of “adolescence” and the imaginary wall that the notion constructs between young people and adults. Macleod examines the entrenched status of “adolescence” within a colonialist discourse that equates development of the individual with the development of civilisation, and the consequent threat of degeneration that “adolescence” implies. Many important issues are explored, such as the invention of teenage pregnancy and abortion as a social problem; issues of race, culture and tradition in relation to teenage pregnancy; and health service provider practices, specifically in relation to managing risk. In the final chapter, an argument is made for a shift from the signifier “teenage pregnancy” to “unwanted pregnancy”.Using data gathered from studies worldwide, this book highlights central issues in the global debate concerning teenage pregnancy. It is ideal for academics, and students of health psychology, women’s studies, nursing and sociology, as well as practitioners in the fields of youth and social work, medicine and counselling. |

‘Getting it right’: Three essays in international development. $69 This dissertation puts together a collection of essay examining issues that surround the age old question why some nations are rich and other nations poor. Each essay in my dissertation examines a specific question from one of these three areas. My dissertation is arranged in five chapters. Chapter 3 examines 'Getting the Institutions Right.' This essay explores how secure property rights are achieved and presents evidence of the relative importance of formal and informal property rights institutions. Chapter 4 develops a theory and empirically examines 'Getting the Culture Right.' (No)Where To Go $110.99 Bentley’s research examines the experiences of five lesbian and bisexual young women who were homeless in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Based on key informant interviews, Bentley undertakes an intersectional analysis of gender, race, class, and sexuality in an adapted institutional ethnography that explores what the young women’s stories reveal about key social institutions. Their narratives disrupt mainstream, common sense notions about street youth that position homes and families as unproblematic sites of unconditional love and safety. Bentley’s narrators reveal that their public school experiences reflected an institutionally violent atmosphere for queer youth. The young women also discuss encountering troubling barriers to accessing youth housing, BC Benefits, police, mental health, and addictions services. Bentley’s research is essential reading for all those professionals and advocates whose work influences the lives of young women, including policy makers, teachers, school administrators, addictions counselors, health care staff, social workers, as well as the post-secondary education programs that provide credentials to these professionals. |

Consider, for example, why 90 percent of those filing for bankruptcy are middle class: The share of family income devoted to “fixed costs”—housing, child care, health insurance, and taxes—has climbed from 53 percent to 75 percent in the past two decades. College tuition has increased 35 percent in the past five years while credit card debt has risen 31 percent. Despite this sobering reality, Mooney offers concrete ideas on how we can stop this downward spiral. |
